Basic education

  • DBE schools masterlist: spreadsheets with detailed information on every school in each province of South Africa.

  • DBE basic education statistics: in pdf reports which analyse data from the SNAP Survey for Ordinary Schools, Annual Survey for Early Childhood Development (ECD), Learner Unit Record Information and Tracking System (LURITS) and Provincial Data Warehouses.

  • DBE National Recruitment Database of Qualified South African Educators here, lists the details of educators who are currently seeking employment across all provinces.

  • Provincial departments of education vacancy pages e.g. Free State

  • SNAP Survey of Ordinary Schools 1997-2016: annual collection of data from all schools on learner and educator numbers, staff type, gender and remuneration. Hosted by Datafirst.

  • National Senior Certificate (NSC) Examinations 2010-2016: performance of learners in NSC examinations, by subject and examination center. Also hosted by Datafirst.

  • NSC Examination reports 2018: School Performance Report and Schools Subject Report.

  • Stats SA education statistics such as those gathered as part of the General Household Survey (GHS) and 2016 Community Survey. See Nesstar webview for data.

  • Data Driven Districts programme with a demo site.

Higher education

  • DHET publishes a variety of statistics on higher education institutions (HEIs) (largely universities), TVETs, CETs and SETA learning programmes. Covers student enrolments, staffing, examination results and graduations, and NSFAS and other funding distributions. This is in few places: Publications, PSET Statistics, Planning, Policy and Strategy.

  • NSFAS research reports provide aggregate stats on funding allocation, labour market absorption

  • DHET registers of skills development providers, private higher education institutions and private colleges. Extracted list of private institutions from Nov 2018.

  • Organising framework for occupations (OFO) list of job categories and descriptions.

  • Public TVET colleges contact information and GPS location.

  • South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) hosts lists of Professional Bodies, Professional Designations, Trades, Qualifications, Unit Standards.

  • Centre for Higher Education Trust has sourced, analysed and visualised data from DHET related to universities and colleges in South Africa (and Africa). [the CHET site seems to be unavailable but you can see a snapshot from 2017 here]

  • Individual university institution data such as University of Pretoria tuition and residence fees.

  • DHET PSET Research Repository [link error] has "links to electronic theses and research publications including articles, conference proceedings, working papers and some research articles". The next phase of the Labour Market Intelligence project is here.
