Police & defence data resources
We are starting to collect policing, defence and other safety/ security-related data. Feel free Tweet us if you have anything to suggest.
Police and crime
Being with the official South African Police Service (SAPS) crime statistics and police station boundaries. See these example extracts of coordinates and boundaries.
Then also look at the Stats SA victims of crime survey (the data is available on Nesstar as usual) and the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) Crime Hub.
The South African Banking Risk Information Centre (SABRIC) compiles their own statistics from members which you can probably request from them, and you may want to enquire with national and industry business associations to see if they collect data.
Finally, we suggest reviewing this article by AfricaCheck on analysing crime rates in South Africa.
Protests
See this useful paper about protests data.
Then see the SAPS Incident Registration Information System (IRIS) data for 2013 to 2018 sourced through @SAHAnews PAIA request.
@MunicipalIQ generates a Protests per Capita Index.
@ACLEDINFO hosts a Political Violence and Protest Dashboard for South Africa.
ISS also creates a Public protest and violence map
@AppliedCSL and @UWC_DOI have previously produced a Civic Protest Barometer.
