# Police & defence data resources

We are starting to collect policing, defence and other safety/ security-related data. Feel free Tweet us if you have anything to suggest.

## Police and crime

Being with the official South African Police Service (SAPS) [crime statistics](https://www.saps.gov.za/services/crimestats.php) and [police station boundaries](https://www.saps.gov.za/services/boundary.php). See these example extracts of [coordinates](https://africaopendata.org/dataset/police-station-coordinates) and [boundaries](https://africaopendata.org/dataset/police-station-boundaries).

Then also look at the Stats SA [victims of crime survey](http://www.statssa.gov.za/?page_id=1866\&PPN=P0341\&SCH=7373) (the data is available on [Nesstar](http://nesstar.statssa.gov.za:8282/webview/) as usual) and the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) [Crime Hub](https://issafrica.org/crimehub).

The South African Banking Risk Information Centre ([SABRIC](https://www.sabric.co.za/)) compiles their own statistics from members which you can probably request from them, and you may want to enquire with national and industry business associations to see if they collect data.

Finally, we suggest reviewing [this article](<https://africacheck.org/2018/09/12/analysis-crime-rates-worse-than-south-african-police-calculated/ >) by AfricaCheck on analysing crime rates in South Africa.

## Protests

See this useful [paper](http://www.scielo.org.za/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext\&pid=S1991-38772018000100004) about protests data.

Then see the [SAPS Incident Registration Information System (IRIS) data](http://foip.saha.org.za/request_tracker/entry/sah-2018-sap-0001/) for 2013 to 2018 sourced through [@SAHAnews](https://twitter.com/SAHAnews) PAIA request.

[@MunicipalIQ](https://twitter.com/MunicipalIQ) generates a Protests per Capita Index.

[@ACLEDINFO](https://twitter.com/ACLEDINFO) hosts a [Political Violence and Protest Dashboard](https://acleddata.com/dashboard/#/dashboard) for South Africa.

ISS also creates a [Public protest and violence map](https://issafrica.org/crimehub/maps/public-violence)

[@AppliedCSL](https://twitter.com/AppliedCSL) and [@UWC\_DOI](https://twitter.com/UWC_DOI) have previously produced a [Civic Protest Barometer](https://dullahomarinstitute.org.za/news/acsl-delivers-civic-protest-barometer-2018-fact-sheet-1).
